Mesembryanthemum crystallinum 'issalat'
- Ice lettuce is not an iceberg lettuce.
- It is actually a midsummer flower with thick, fleshy leaves that are eaten as a salad.
- Perfect for a meal with smoked salmon, or the salad in a shooting star.
- The leaves can also be blanched and eaten like spinach.
- It grows wild in California, along the coast. It thrives in the salty air and spray from the sea.
- Grow it in pots and give it a little salt water regularly, and it will taste better.
- You can also cover the soil around the plant with seaweed, which is naturally salty.
- The plant grows flat and looks a bit like New Zealand spinach.
- If the plant gets dry, the leaves will shrivel up a bit, but will wake up again when you water.
