Dwarf rhododendron and Japanese azalea are low and good in the foreground of an acidic soil bed.
Some are evergreen - others shed some of their leaves in winter.
The colors are white, light yellow, rose, pink, red and purple.
Most can be pruned right after flowering - if you think it's necessary.
